Some of you may have seen Delta Airlines billboard advertisements in Edinburgh that depict a buffalo and narrative stating that from June 6th there will be direct flights between Edinburgh and Atlanta in the USA.
I’m all for more direct routes to different countries from Edinburgh and opening up another direct route to the USA is a welcome step forward. The Delta website advertises that, with the exception of July and August this year, return flights from Edinburgh to Las Vegas are available for ¬£498. San Francisco a mere ¬£378 return and Miami ¬£488. You must travel on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and book before 15th May 2006: only 5 days away.
I gave this a try and got the following quotes from the Delta website, for travel in June and September (figures I quote include all taxes):-
Edinburgh to Las Vegas
- £516 via connection at Atlanta. Departs 1.45pm Thursday June 8th from Edinburgh and gets back into Edinburgh 9.45am on Friday June 23rd
- £497 departing Thursday 14th September 2006 and back in Edinburgh 29th September 2006 (same flight times as above).
Same flights in August were much higher at £818.
Edinburgh to Miami
- £487, via connection at Atlanta. Depart 8th June and back June 23rd: same times to/from Edinburgh as Las Vegas flight above, with 3 hours 40 minute wait for connection
- £487 same flight times/dates as above, but departing 14th September and back 29th September
Same flights in August had shot up to £831.
So it’s reassuring to see these offers are actually available, even ¬£1 cheaper. San Francisco was a little different with the June flights being quoted at ¬£516 and those in September costing ¬£512. Perhaps the lure of flights for just ¬£378 from Edinburgh to San Francisco has already proved popular enough to raise the prices.
Anyhow, if wishing to experience these American cities, especially Las Vegas and Miami, outside the peak July and August period, I’d recommend a prompt look on the Delta website before the offer ends in just five days time.
