Fish, chips and mushy peas from Pierinos

A while back I read an interview with Martin Wishart, Edinburgh’s Michelin starred chef, where he praised the fish and chips from Pierinos takeaway, which is located on Leith’s Bernard Street. If Pierinos fish and chips were good enough for Martin Wishart they were surely good enough for The Edinburgh Blog.

Pierinos is a compact takeaway which has the pizza counter at the back and the hot stand for all other takeaway food along the right-hand side. Their takeaway fish and chips are not cheap at £5.50, although the quantity is generous - enough to satisfy the strongest of appetites. Our full order of two lots of fish, chips and mushy peas, a pickled onion and can of coke cost £14.20. The fish and chips were presented in a neat cardboard box, with the generous quantity of mushy peas also inside. This is an excellent way to serve the food and means you can eat sat on a bench outside without spoiling your clothes with the grease, or eat at home out the box without needing to wash the plates afterwards.

The chips were really good, definitely the best I have had in Edinburgh - a rich, crispy exterior encased a delicious fluffy centre. The fish was very good as well - plentiful amounts of white fish complemented with a crisp, tasty batter. The fish wasn’t soggy and limp which seems to be prevalent in many Edinburgh takeaway’s. The mushy peas were a little bland by comparison, but I always feel these necessary when eating takeaway fish and chips, so didn’t regret their inclusion. I haven’t sampled that many takeaway fish and chips within Edinburgh city centre, but so far as my experience goes I can confidently say Pierinos offer the best takeaway fish and chips I have tasted in Edinburgh.

Pierinos takeaway menu is fairly interesting with pakoras, steak pie, chicken wings and more joining all the usual favourites. Their pizzas provide good value and look very decent. Pierinos also have a well stocked bar, so you can pick a few extra beers up on the way home. Although, with so much made of binge and underage drinking, some will be disappointed to see large bottles of cider in the fridges. So while Pierinos fish and chips are the jewel in their crown, their other takeaway options are not to be dismissed.

A good fish and chips by the sea is always a winning combination and Pierinos in Leith certainly offer that. If there’s a better takeaway fish and chips to be had in Edinburgh I don’t know of it. Highly recommended.

Pierinos is located located at 11 Bernard St, Leith, Edinburgh, EH6 6PW. They provide home delivery service and the telephone number is 0131 477 7727.
