Shanas, the Indian and Bangladeshi takeaway, on Raeburn Place in Stockbridge, Edinburgh has always provided me with consistently high quality curry. This evening I called into their modest sized premises to grab a Chicken Bhuna (£4.90), Pilau Rice (£1.90) and a plain nan bread (£1.65).
The takeaway is open plan with a couple of small tables and a tiny sofa to sit on while you wait for your food. The kitchen is partitioned off, but fully visible: so you can see the chefs prepare your order. It took just over 10 minutes for my order to be readied, but you can phone in and order for pickup in advance. Alternatively, Shanas offer free delivery on orders over £15. I don’t mind sitting and waiting for the food though as there’s always a healthy selection of magazines to peruse including FHM, OK and various car magazines.
Everytime I have ordered a curry through Shanas I’ve always been given a free popadom along with small pot of red onion accompaniment and ‘mint dip’ (popadoms are 50p each from Shanas). This is a nice touch. I’ve never had a bad curry from this very good takeaway and the Bhuna contained plentiful chicken and a really good thick bhuna sauce. There’s never been an occasion where I’ve felt let down by the quality of the food or the quantity. Shanas offer a decent sized menu with all the usual suspects here, along with some tasty appetisers . Prices are reasonable and offer good value, when you consider what some other Indian takeaways would give you for the money. The service is always effective and friendly.
Overall Shanas is my preferred source for Indian takeaway in Stockbridge and definitely one of the star takeaways in Edinburgh’s Stockbridge area. Shanas is located 45 Raeburn Place, EH4 1HX. Their phone number is 0131 332 6606.
