It’s only 5 days until Christmas Day and just 11 days until New Years Eve. That means 11 days until Hogmanay in Edinburgh and for 100,000 people that will mean a trip to the Hogmanay Street Party. The £2.50 street party passes are now sold out - but if you still want to grab a ticket ebay has some 300 listings. I’m no psychic but if I was to predict the weather for New Years Eve wet, windy, cold…no make that freezing cold spring to mind! And with last admittance at 11pm this year, these factors could be a serious dampener on your outdoor celebrations :-(
While many of you will be out with the crates of Tenants lager or flasks of Whisky, one of our guest contributors has kindly provided some of her tips for the evening. If you have some more please share them using the comments link at the bottom of this post!
Drink, Be Merry, Be Warm
Buy a small thermos flask which comes with an over the shoulder type carry case. Fill it with any of the following;
- Hot Chocolate with a dash of Tia Maria - or any liqueur you fancy
- Hot Mulled Wine
- Hot Spiced Apple Wine (heat up half apple juice, half white wine, a cinnamon stick, cloves and brown sugar to taste - white rum also optional)
Cold Hands ?
Go to any decent golf shop and ask for the little sachet hand-warmers which golfers use in their gloves. These nifty little sachets are no bigger than the palm of your hand and when you shake them, the magic sand activates and becomes hot for a good couple of hours. One in each glove and some stuffed around your jacket will keep you toasty warm!
Cold Feet ?
Only wear proper woolly hill walking socks and pull them all the way up! Long-Johns are also a good option. :o)
Also, invest in some Lambswool liners for your shoes - they keep your feet toasty warm!
Keep Yourself Dry
Buy a plastic disposable rain-mac (yep like American tourists). If it rains you’ll be grateful as there is no room for umbrella’s at the street party and everyone will harass you to death to get rid of it. It might only sprinkle (if we’re lucky) but the slightest drizzle of Scottish rain will leave you snap frozen if it’s cold enough!
I’m personally planning on a house party starting around 7pm and then a group of us heading to the Street Party to see in midnight and watch the fireworks. And another house party after that. If you’re after some fairly decent Champagne for New Years Eve, but don’t want to break the bank, Morrisons have a good offer on the ‘Heidsieck & Co Mononpole Blue Top NV’ . Just £12.99 a bottle! The offers on until 1st January 2006, but when I popped in to buy some from the Comely Bank store today there were only 3 bottles left on the shelf… after I’d bought mine!
Whatever happens - have a fantastic Hogmanay! (and feel free to share your experience in Edinburgh with The Edinburgh Blog)
