Lunch at The Merlin, Morningside

The Merlin Bar is located on Edinburgh’s Morningside Road and is a large, modern bar. It has a plethora of seating areas with tables. Toward the back of the pub is a pool table (¬£1.20 per game) and a large projected screen where live sport is shown. The bar is popular with students, especially midweek with many 2 for 1 offers available on cocktails or meals.

The table we sat at for lunch was fairly high up and from this elevated position we perused the A4 menu sheet. The prices are typical for gastro pub meals: soup of the day cost £3.25, 8oz Sirloin £9.95 or traditional fish and chips for £7.25. The menu also has some more adventurous choices such as salmon and crayfish risotto (£9.45) or red thai chicken curry (£7.45).

I opted for the outdoor reared pork sausages on a bed of mash. At £6.45 this represented good value and included very good quality sausages. The mash potato had good texture and taste. It was however served draped with gravy that was, at best lukewarm, and at worst cold. After gaining the attention of the waitress she was more than happy to take this back through to the kitchen and a few moments later it came out steaming hot, complete with apology. It would have been better for the chef to have checked before sending out though. Presumably the gravy was left to go cold while waiting for the Aberdeen Angus burger and chips (£5.95) that my dining partner had ordered. At £5.95 the burger represented very good value and was served with a tasty BBQ chutney.

After the meal we stayed for some drinks and games of pool, with friendly/helpful staff on hand at the bar throughout.

The Merlin isn’t a bar I would head to specifically for food, nor recommend a trip to for solely its food. But it is a decent venue for drinks with friends. And a bar that’s able to provide decent enough accompanying food if needed.

The Merlin Bar is located at 168-172 Morningside Road. You can see its location at Google Maps.

  1. Thanks for posting your reviews. I enjoy reading them (and they make me hungry!).

It’s unfortunate that the gravy with the pork sausage wasn’t hot. We’ve visited The Merlin around once a month over the past few months, usually on a Saturday, and have always enjoyed the food there. The Aberdeen Angus Burger, in particular, is the best burger I’ve ever tasted, particularly with the blue cheese sauce. I would recommend it to anyone.

My only complaint (it’s more of an observation, really) is that the portions are HUGE. But that’s better than being short-changed.

Anyhow, keep up the good work. Have you been to The Stable Bar at Mortonhall yet?
